Who were the three children of Fatima?
Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto were the three shepherd children who received the apparitions of Our Lady at the Cova da Iria in Fatima, Portugal, between May and October of A.D. 1917. What is the message of Our Lady of Fatima?
At Fatima, Our Lady asked the faithful to pray the Rosary daily, do penance for the conversion of sinners, and grow in devotion to her Immaculate Heart. She tied these requests directly to peace in the world, promising that prayer and penance would obtain peace, and warning that their neglect would bring suffering. The message is a tender, urgent echo of the Gospel call to conversion, prayer, and trust.
What is the Miracle of the Sun?
On October 13, A.D. 1917, an estimated 70,000 people gathered at the Cova da Iria after Our Lady had promised the children a sign so that all might believe. Witnesses (including secular journalists and skeptics) reported that the sun appeared to dance and spin in the sky, and that ground and clothing soaked by earlier rain dried instantly. The Catholic Church approved devotion to Our Lady of Fatima in A.D. 1930.
